The Institution is justifiably concerned for the future of the surveying profession and the spatial information industry. Even though the spatial information industry in Australia is currently worth over one billion dollars annually, at an estimated growth rate of 20% each year, there are less people entering the industry than retiring from it. For smart school leavers, this provides an enviable opportunity.
The Institution promotes the practice of surveying through Career Expos and the co-production of its promotional DVD, which is available from the Institution office. The Institution supports all tertiary education establishments through membership of the Surveying & Mapping Industry Council of NSW and the presentation of scholarships and prizes.
The formation of the Institution's Young Surveyors Group is testament to the Institution's focus on the future of the profession. This Group provides a forum for young surveyors to air their views and be heard by the older members of the profession. The Group puts young surveyors in contact with surveyors who can mentor them and provide them with opportunities for development.
