In 2000 the Institution identified a need to provide members with an opportunity to attain their Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points from a single event. Remotely located members were having difficulty in gaining the necessary number of points, with working life becoming busier and more demanding.
Originally known as the Remote Members Seminar, it evolved into the Australia Day Seminar, and prior to FIG2010, the South East Australian Surveying and Spatial Information Congress (SEASSiC).
Returning in 2011, to its format of providing members with an opportunity to come to Sydney for Australia Day and a two day CPD event, has ensured the Institution continues to offer a quality, value for money education and networking experience.
The event also includes a dinner with eminent speaker to further promote the networking and camaraderie that is part of the Surveying ethos.
It is an event which showcases the different abilities and interests of surveyors.
Common topics in the past have included:-
The event also provides a trade show which is accessible to participants over the two days, making it possible to view new products, services and technologies, relevant to the surveying and spatial sectors.
The Excellence in Surveying and Spatial Information Awards enable the industry to celebrate the achievements of some of the finest professionals and organisations in the country.
The gala dinner is held each year in the Sydney CBD and includes entertainment into the night.

As part of its operations, the Institution of Surveyors NSW offers a regular series of Continuing Professional Development seminars throughout the year, on various topics relevant to its members.

Since 2002, the Seniors Group has arranged an annual luncheon in The Strangers Dining Room at Parliament House, Sydney.
The Luncheon is held annually in February to facilitate attendance by the host Parliamentarian while Parliament is in recess.
The purpose of the function is to promote the surveying profession to members of parliament, to members of the surveying profession and to interested kindred professionals by arranging a luncheon in a prestige location with a high standard of presentation and an eminent speaker to address the participants on a topic of current general interest to surveyors, their partners and guests.
The function has broadened in recent years from providing an opportunity for fellowship between other members of the surveying profession and their partners, to include students from surveying schools whose attendance is sponsored to facilitate their acquaintance with their older colleagues and their experience in such functions.
The high culinary standard and presentation of the meals and the excellence of presentations by the guest speakers has established the function as the premier social event in the Group's calendar and a highlight in the Institution's calendar.
