“Any Surveyor, at anytime, anywhere in the world, after any natural disaster can repeat this project and achieve the same results.”
The recent bushfires significantly impacted many regions across Australia, including vast areas of bushland and some rural & residential areas. Approximately four weeks after the bushfires ceased, the ICD surveying team; voluntarily commenced a project in one bushfire affected community. They initially set out to find and protect subsurface survey reference marks but soon found this project brought much bigger rewards than they ever could have expected.
This survey was able to engage the adversely affected owners in ways they never imagined. Simply put, it seemed to get their minds off the destruction that surrounded them (if only temporarily) and reconnected them with their land. ICD Asia Pacific is still engaging regularly with these landowners and has provided them material and physical help to assist their recovery. It is a long road ahead and this project serves as a tribute to all that Surveying was and still is today.
Peter Howie graduated from the University of New Wouth Wales in May 1987 and is a Registered Surveyor in both NSW and WA. He has over 32 years surveying experience (since 1988) and experience in both Rural Surveying – 14 years; and Urban Surveying 18 years. Peter has worked in many surveying fields and still enjoys the profession after all these years. When he is not surveying, Peter enjoys spending time with his family; boating, fishing, moutain e-biking and anything adventurous.
