ISNSW Governance
The Committee
The Committee (or Board) is the governing body of The Institution of Surveyors NSW Inc. (ISNSW) with twenty (20) Directors at present. It determines regulation and policy, sets strategic direction, and monitors the organisations financial performance. In liaison with the Administration Manager it also appoints staff.
Management of the organisation is the responsibility of the Administration Manager and staff, and The Committee sets specific roles for it's Groups, and other sub committees.
The Committee includes the roles of President, President Elect and Immediate Past President, Honorary Secretary and Honorary Treasurer. Other Directors represent each of the Groups, and four (4) members elected from the general membership.
The President is nominated for a two (2) year term from the general membership and serves as President Elect for a two year term prior to taking the role of Institution President. Following the term as President, the role provides support to the incoming President for a further two (2) years.
The Honorary Secretary and Honorary Treasurer are elected from the general membership, generally for a one (1) year term.
Group representatives are elected by the individual Committees of the Groups.
The background to having four (4) generally elected members, originates from when the positions were historically elected for representation to The Institution of Surveyors Australia (ISA), by the NSW Division of ISA.
President - Mr Grahame Wallis
Grahame Wallis is a Registered Surveyor with a solid belief in the cadastre and the vital role it provides in underpinning the economy of NSW and the nation. Grahame has been a practising surveyor for over 40 years, completing his university studies at The University of New South Wales in 1968.
Grahame graduated in 1969, and attained his Certificate of Competency from the Board of Surveyors in September 1970, he then studied for a Graduate Certificate in Public Sector Management that he completed through Flinders University in 1997.
Throughout Grahame's career he has worked within the NSW Public Sector, under many Department guises centered around what many know as Lands.
The highlight of Grahame's career has been his involvement in the resurvey of the borders of NSW. Having
worked on the Qld, SA and Vic borders as well as being involved with the ACT border. Grahame considered this a fascinating experience where very old surveys and marks are combined with modern survey techniques.
It is Grahame's belief that surveying gives you a great insight into the shape and form of the country side and makes you, more aware of your surroundings. Carrying out surveys and being in charge of survey parties teaches you to think for yourself to be able to resolve problems, and means you become more understanding of others, your family and the wider community.
Having just retired from the Land and Property Management Authority (LPMA) of the NSW Government, Grahame felt it was an appropriate time for him to put something back in return for what the profession had provided him. Grahame had been an active member of the Survey Practice and Legislative Sub-Committee since 1999, and was interested in becoming more involved in the running of ISNSW.
